A minimum of thirteen individuals killed and 98 wounded in train crash in the nation of Mexico.
A fatal railway accident in the southern state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite censure from critics regarding the speed and management of the country's major public works projects.
The accident took place on the Interoceanic Train, a rail link constructed to link the Atlantic and Pacific across the narrowest part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This project was designed to establish an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, intended to promote economic development in the area.
“We will rigorously clarify the reasons behind this accident,” affirmed the head of state.
The president announced that, of the approximately 250 individuals on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in grave condition. The president added plans to go to Oaxaca to speak with those impacted.
Key Undertaking of Previous Administration
The Interoceanic Train was a signature development scheme of the previous administration, whose term concluded the year before. This venture was intimately linked to his government's developmental vision for the southeastern region.
Another ambitious train initiative from that era, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also central to the broader strategy to kickstart the economy of a relatively less developed part of the country.
Construction Oversight and Risks Apprehensions
The building of both rail lines was managed by the nation's military, marking a notable growth of its role in national works. They were completed at an rapid pace, surpassing forecasts to be partially inaugurated before the end of that presidency.
However, this fast-paced schedule had also raised significant apprehensions over safety standards.
- Sunday's crash was the third occurrence on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
- This involves an previous accident this month when a train struck a truck at a railroad crossing.
- The other major rail project has also had several non-deadly derailments.
Appeals for Review and Suspension
In the wake of the disaster, the head of a key rival party demanded an urgent halt in the construction and operation of all comparable projects.
This stoppage was suggested pending a full technical review. The party emphasized that the loss of life "calls for immediate answers."
In reply, the head of state asserted that the train had been running in full adherence to all security protocols. Commitments were given that the government would remain "diligent" in both the development and operation of these vital undertakings.
